No-one wants an ELEPHANT treading on their Kindle...

 ... or any other eReader or tablet, for that matter!  Well, you'd think so, wouldn't you, but you'd be wrong, because I recently received a request from a client for an elephant-themed case for a Blackberry Playbook.  The brief was that it had to be quirky, and not girly. After hunting down a few 'elephant' fabrics, this fabulous cotton canvas in red, navy blue and natural was chosen.

As I had plenty of fabric left over, I thought I'd offer an 'Elephants' sleeve on my website, as handmade to order for other eReaders and tablets, not just the Blackberry Playbook. I almost immediately received an order for a case to fit the Kindle 4 (the keyboardless, smallest model), which just goes to show that elephants and expensive gadgets do mix after all!

Do you Etsy...? And what do you do with YOUR eggs...?

I'm not talking food here, so I don't mean poached, boiled, scrambled or fried!

As the saying goes, never put all your eggs in one basket.  So my felted bag and purse patterns are listed for sale on Ravelry and Craftsy, and also on Etsy.

However, what to do with my handmade fabric Kindle, iPad and other eReader and tablet cases has had me scratching my head in recent weeks.  My website ticks over quite nicely, but with Folksy no longer being the decent selling platform it was before last November's changes, it was time to look for alternatives.  And alternatives that might work (for me) so Zibbet, DaWanda, MISI and Coriandr were out as I'd had no luck with them in the past.

I eventually decided on a couple of lesser known but recommended sites - Luulla.com and BigCartel.com - and, of course, that crafting world giant, Etsy, where I already have a shop selling my knit and felt bag patterns.  I'm not totally convinced my Kindle sleeves, etc, will sell from my Etsy shop, as US fabric prices are a fraction of those here, making it impossible to compete on cost.  But Etsy is becoming more widely known in the UK, buyers can search only UK shops if they wish, and I can price in £ rather than $ these days, so I live in hope.  Only a few items added so far, but I'll gradually add more as time permits.

If you sell on Etsy - or on another site not mentioned above - I'd love to hear your experiences. :)

Possibly the Coolest iPad Case in the World...

Owls Don't Have Eyeballs (and other facts)

Many of us, including me, find owls incredibly attractive, perhaps because their large, front-facing eyes make them look almost human.  But how many of us are aware that owls in Britain are in decline?  Not many, I suspect, because we see images of these amazing and beautiful creatures everywhere, thanks to their popularity. (And I can personally attest to that popularity as products made with owl fabrics - like the new iPad case pictured - are by far my best sellers.)  The reason for the decline is, of course, loss of habitat and nesting sites.

As a bit of a bird anorak, I was aware of this decline, but what I didn't know until quite recently is that owls don't have eyeballs.  Their eyes, about the same size and weight as human eyes, are actually tubular in shape and can't therefore move in their sockets.  To compensate, their long necks (much longer than they look!) are able to move their heads 270 degrees horizontally - which is about three-quarters of a circle - and 90 degrees vertically.  This incredible flexibility makes complete sense once you know why they have it (and I'd wondered for years!).  Isn't nature amazing...?

Thankfully, our British owls' decline can be reversed - visit the World Owl Trust to see the wonderful work they do (and donate £1 if you can).  And this important work won't just help owls - many other bird and animal species are also in serious decline as a result of habitat loss, so they too will benefit.  :)

Back on the road to recovery... and new Kindle cases...

My goodness, it's been an absolute age since I blogged! The main reasons have been that I was first of all so swamped with orders for my handmade Kindle sleeves, I had no time at all to do anything but sew;  then illness struck, forcing me to close BaggieAggie.com for almost three months.  But I'm slowly getting back in the groove, and here you can see a couple of examples of new Kindle / Kobo cases recently listed. I'll be busy making more in the next few days, to catch up with demand for covers for the brand new Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G, released in the UK by Amazon only last week. Some gorgeous new fabrics arrived on Friday, and I can't wait to get started!

I love custom orders. Usually!

I do, I really do, but this padded and lined Kindle case with its continuous zip along two sides was difficult for someone with upper-body disorders, mainly due to the amount of hand-sewing involved.  It took three times as long to make as my usual eReader cases, and that doesn't include all the breaks I had to take.  Plus I had to spread the work out over two days.

 But it's done now, and will shortly be winging its way to Malaysia.  I hope the client likes it! 

I'm building a website...!

Yes, you read that right! In fact, I'll repeat it for all those in denial: severely technically-challenged little old me is building a website. The platform is Weebly, and I have to say it's a darn sight easier to use than Wix (which I gave up on after a couple of hair-tearing days!).

Having said that, I did have a hair-tearing morning yesterday. I bought a domain name (after reading somewhere that Weebly addresses don't float to anywhere near the top in searches) so that I could change my URL and lose the 'weebly' bit. Weebly have brilliant instructions on how to 'point' the new domain at their site, but their sample screenshots bore little relation to my domain registrar's. So, rather than run the risk of destroying the entire internet with my ineptitude, I begged the registrar to do the pointing for me. Which they did, thank goodness, so I'm now www.baggieaggie.com. There's lots to do and change still, but I'm getting there!

In the meantime, I've struggled to get any new items made, but yesterday afternoon I managed to list this Kindle case with an African flavour. I love this fabric. If you do too, and you fancy something other than a Kindle case, just ask. :)

I was recently asked to custom-make a fabric passport holder / cover, and have since decided to offer them permanently on my website. 'Pink Flower' on the left is now available, and more will follow soon, including some in fabrics more suitable for men.

Owls and Phones...

My Owls card wallet has been so popular, I decided to add an Owls phone holder to my Folksy shop. It sold so quickly, I've now added another. It will fit most phones, including the latest iPhone.

It's fully padded and lined, and fastens with double-stitched velcro to keep precious phones secure. All seams are hidden.

If owls aren't your thing, other phone pockets are available and, as always, custom orders most welcome. :)

Crafters: Does Feedback Inspire You...?

I've been busy making and promoting accessories for BaggieAggietoo, so my bag shop (BaggieAggie) has been rather neglected over the last few months. Not helped by the series of mega disasters OH and I have been (and still are) coping with! But a couple of weeks ago one of my felted bags sold, and I received the following feedback:

This has spurred me to get BaggieAggie back on track, and the above Pleat bag is now available here. It's fully-lined in vintage Laura Ashley cotton to match, has a zipped internal pocket, and fastens with a magnetic snap. Other colours and designs to be added soon.

(For those of you who'd like to have a go at making Pleat yourself, the pattern download is available here. Ravelry is a US site, and most of my pattern customers are American, hence the $ prices. But Paypal automatically shows the price in your particular currency, so you see the exact cost before hitting that final button.)

Handcrafted business card wallets

I listed the above, my first 2-pocket business card wallet, on Folksy this afternoon. It's so pretty, I can hardly bear to part with it!

The main fabric is Makower's Stash (called that for obvious reasons!) and I've lined the wallet in a white-and-navy cotton twill. I've fully interfaced for structure and durabilty, and there's a ribbon loop and button fastening. Would be perfect, I think, for fabric sellers and crafters alike, or anyone who likes pretty things.

Pinch Punch

Is it really July 1st...? I'm always amazed at how quickly time flies, yet when I was a child, Monday to Friday seemed forever.

And Christmas, well, it seemed a century away; if only that was so now! In approximately three months, the shops will be putting up decorations and setting up seasonal displays. Is it only me who thinks Christmas should begin arriving no earlier than December 1st...?

And not only is it July 1st, it's also Thursday so almost a week has gone by without a single piece of fabric or length of thread having passed through my hands. Not through choice, of course, as recent posts show. Ah well. Maybe, just maybe, Figure8 bag will see some action later today!
